Sew Fabulous Hive Blog Hop

Welcome to Sewing Time with Brownie! My name is Johanna, it rhymes with banana....too many people pronounce my name differently. It is easier to go by Jo, but there is already a Jo Morton in the quilting world. I can purchase fabric with my "name" on the selvage. Pretty cool, huh?

Brownie is my daughter's stuffed seal that hangs out with me during the day and sews. When my daughter started preschool, she thought of any and every excuse why she couldn't go. One day, she said she couldn't go because Brownie would miss her and be bored. I let Brownie hang out with me and sew that day. I had no idea that it would turn into a regular thing. I certainly did not know that we would have to "report in" about our adventures to my daughter. It was actually quite motivating; we would be in big trouble if we had nothing to show for the day! Brownie doesn't hang around with me as much lately, she's getting a little older. She still pops in from time to time though.

You'll have to excuse Brownie. She heard that we would have visitors today and sometimes she can be a little shy. What's that Brownie? No, they know you are not a brownie. No, they don't want to eat you. My daughter has a sock monkey that teases Brownie all the time and tries to eat her. "Yum, brownies!"

Brownie's picture is the profile too. She is sporting her pin cup party hat. Those little Dixie cups come in handy for pins and of course, for M&Ms too. I've learned not to mix up the cups though. Yikes!

Would you like to see a few of the quilts I've made? Of course you do!

One thing that I've learned about blogging so far, besides the fact that I am not a photographer (but my oldest daughter is, thanks J), is to write down ideas for posts as they pop into your head. I have a few posts/ideas saved as drafts in Blogger. If I don't get my ideas logged, they end up lost somewhere in my head. It reminds me of going to the grocery store without a list, you know how that goes!

My favorite thing that I've learned with quilting is to press seams open instead of to one side. I love how flat it lays.

Some fun things you may or may not WANT to know about:

I love cutting up fresh veggies. It clears my mind and as a bonus, it's healthy.

I'm a weather geek. I absolutely love blizzards and of course thundersnow :)

I actually have a favorite book, and I am not a reader. I loved Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Book Store.

I'm not a big movie fan, does Rudolph count? I am a huge Rudolph fan. Is it Hermie or Herbie? Don't get me going on that!

I'd love to know what type of music you listen to while you sew. Perhaps you listen to audio books? I actually enjoy rap and hip hop, especially old school. Anyone that know me thinks this is quite hysterical since my personality doesn't match this at all! They have even quizzed me about songs and artists just to make sure!

Thanks for stopping by! We hope to see you again! Please visit the other bloggers in my hive!

  2. I really don't listen to music but do have the TV on for background noise.

  3. I always always listen to music while I sew. Classical, new age, blues, classic rock, new rock and Motown, depending on my mood. CBC Radio 2 is my fave station, great mix, or my iTunes! Oh, I hear you on the jotting ideas down immediately! Love the Brownie story, as well as the Jo Morton fabric! I have to add that I just love all your quilts here. Every. One. :-)

  4. Good luck blogging. Too much work for me! Love your quilts and your color choices. I just purchased the Audible book, Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore. I know I will enjoy it.

  5. I love the story behind your blog name it sounds like something one of my kids would do. Your quilts are gorgeous. I usually listen to country music or books. The books I listen to are ones that I didn't think I could get through if it was up to me reading them like Jane Austen. I love the books now but in the past when I tried reading them I could never get past a few pages.

  6. It is so great to get to know more about you and the story behind your blog. I think I am going to have to go look up what a thundersnow is now... :)

  7. Love the photo of Brownie peeking out under the quilt. I watch TV and hardly ever listen to music. I love Doctor Who, NCIS, Persons of Interest and Supernatural - all seem to go well with my sewing!

  8. Glad to know that I'm not the only one that listens to rap when they quilt. I also have a tendency to listen to metal...my teenage daughter and her friends think I'm weird. Your quilts are beautiful. Do you make a lot of miniature or smaller quilts?

  9. Nice to meet you and Brownie. I usually watch Coronation Street while sewing. I've never heard of thundersnow, and we get a lot of weather here in Atlantic Canada. Have to find out what it is.

  10. Hi Johanna: I loved reading about you and Brownie. I pretty much listen to any type of music. Rock classical blues, jazz ( as long as it's not too crazy)

  11. Ooooooh your quilts are beautiful. I like your style!

  12. My guess is brownie is a Beanie Baby Seal. I rarely listen to music when I quilt. The radio is always on in my car and at work but not at home. I have three quilting modes. First is nothing but what is running through my head. Second is HGTV on the living room TV in the background. Third, I binge watch various shows on my iPad. This can be a bit difficult because I have to drag the iPad all around the sewing room with my. It is much safer now that I have wireless headphones. Your quilting is lovely.

  13. I just adore your blog style!! I listen to audio books or NPR or the quilty podcasty as I sew. If I'm stressing about a deadline (that has usually passed!) I listen to classical, otherwise, I try to randomly choose from itunes radio, it expands what I hear as our local stations are pretty bad. XX! Lori

  14. I usually watch tv while quilting - Friends, King of Queens, the Good Wife, etc but I also love listening to 90s Hip Hop on youtube radio while quilting! How fun to sing and dance along while getting some sewing done! That's also what I listen to in the car lol.

I really like the quilts you've shared - you have a very calm style.

  15. You have made some gorgeous quilts! I have a playlist of all my favourite music that I listen to while working - it ranges from Chopin to Eminem via tango music and Rammstein... That's not so odd, is it?!

  16. Hi Johanna. I love listening to audio books or music while quilting. I find they make me more productive but I have to have some noise going on! Country to Pop to a little Classic Rock makes my quilting move!

  17. You are a hoot! Brownie too! Okay, I love Rudolph and Hermie! One time when we were on vacation in the summer at my Uncles, we had to go rent the movie to find out what the dentist's name was. My uncle swore my son looked just like him! I love all kinds of music and love listening to podcasts now! I am the kind of person who needs white noise going all the time!

  18. Hi Johanna (and Brownie!). Hope you're having fun on the hop. I was part of last year's and it proved to be invaluable in all the new quilty friends and connections I made and how it improved my blogging. I like to listen to a variety of music, but I admit, it's mostly new alternative or show tunes (I'm a theatre professional, so it's in my blood). I've tried listening to podcasts and audio books but I sometimes have to back it up depending upon what I'm working on. I get so focused on what I'm pinning or sewing that I stop listening and then I'm confused because I missed 10 minutes of the book or conversation.

  19. Johanna, I loved reading your post. I'll be sure to keep visiting you (love your writing style, so fun and fresh). Photos are so hard and time consuming, I wish I had someone to take mine (well, technically, my husband takes mine, but I still have to edit it). I try to listen to podcasts when I sew, or sometimes I just enjoy the silence, because I have a three year-old that loves to talk. So my only quiet time is nap-time/bedtime. :)

  20. Aloha Johanna, lovely job on your introduction post for the blog hop! Your story about Brownie is so cute and your quilts are beautiful. I love listening to music while I'm quilting and I recently found a radio station that plays totally random music. I have to admit, I love it when the Beastie Boys come on!

  21. Hi Johanna, I have a few posts saved as drafts and will one day get around to editing and publishing them! Brownie is very cute and I love the photos of him peeking out from under the quilts. With three children, I enjoy the silence most days but occasionally will turn the radio or tv on for company.

  22. I'm visiting as part of the New Quilt Blogger Hop; I participated last year. I blog over at www.quiltingmod.blogspot.com. I love your quirky sense of humor! It makes for a very entertaining post. I wish I had someone around here who loves prepping veggies. I think it's so unfair that cooking shows and recipes assume you have little minions that do all your prep work.

  23. I love that you are into old school Hip Hop. Even though you're not a lover of movies, you might want to check out the upcoming movie Dope. I think the sound track will be right up our ally. I'm so happy you joined the Blog Hop this year, and I hope you get a lot out of it... especially new blogging friends. And thank you for sharing the story of Brownie... I was wondering about your blog name and now I've had all my questions answered!

  25. Brownie is a cute addition to your sewing space. Your heart quilt is very cute. I rarely turn on music while I sew, but if I do, it's country. I usually "watch" TV. Something that doesn't need a whole lot of attention obviously. :-)

  26. Sounds like your daughter may soon be quilting with Brownie, too! I find photography a challenge as well, but luckily we have gotten all these great tips from fellow bloggers, so hopefully our skillsnwill improve. See you around the blog hop.

  27. It is exactly like going to the grocery store without a list! I like to sew in silence; is that weird, lol? Great post, Jo!

  28. I always sew with either a TV show I don't have to pay too much attention to, or music I can sing along to. Love your story about Brownie!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think the story of Brownie is so cute. The things we mums do right? I like to listen to Modern Sewciety when I sew. I tried watching TV but wonky seam alert! Plus I couldn't follow the story, so podcasts it is

  30. Love your table runner--the fabric and the quilting. I write emails to myself from one email account to another with ideas for blogs. I also like to press my seams open except when I need to nest seams. I generally have MLB baseball on in the background but sometimes I put on some alternative folk music. I'm going with my family to the Kate Wolf Memorial Festival in California next weekend and will get to hear some great folk music. I may have to buy a new CD to listen to while quilting.

  31. I love your sense of humour and writing style! My daughter (now 13) has a beanie baby racoon called Wolfy who used to drive to school with us then join me in the car (in his own safety belt) to work and home again. I too had to tell her what Wolfy did, which was actuarial work for an insurance company so nowhere near as creative as Brownie's sewing! Perhaps we should introduce Wolfy and Brownie and they can be blog buddies? I too love to chop vegetables when I get home from work. Repetitive mindless action is so soothing! Now following on Feedly and looking forward to future posts!

  32. Lately I've been watching tv when I sew - mostly detective shows, because they tend to narrate when they're doing so I don't have to look at the screen the whole time to follow it. Your quilts are lovely!

  33. Hi Jo , enjoyed your blog , I love to read so a book about a bookstore is right up my street . I too like the way seams lie flat when they are opened but I hate having to iron them open ! Seems more trouble !

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love that you sew with Brownie! So cute. I usually listen to audiobooks when I sew.

  35. Hi Johanna, glad to meet you and check out your blog! I have three girls so I can totally see how the conversation goes about stuffies and blankies etc. I really don't listen or watch anything while quilting, though I have always thought I should. I also love rap, and dance music, gets the heart pumping!

  36. I was totally laughing the entire time throughout this post, you're pretty comical! I love your sense of humor! I am absolutely loving Brownie and love that it was incorporated into your blog as well. I am having tons of fun getting to know everyone! I look forward to seeing more of your work!
